Orthodox Movie Night June 19th
We got another Orthodox movie night coming up on June 19th and I’m excited to say that we’ll be watching Babette’s feast!
This film is incredible — it’s a gripping illustration of the Manichean excesses of the Western Protestant Phronema. As the name would imply, there is feasting involved, and the titular feast is a beautiful example of how a meal prepared with love is a small reminder of the Mystical Supper that we participate in at every liturgy.
While the film is not an explicitly Orthodox film, it speaks to the Orthodox Phronema and is enriching nonetheless.
And that’s ultimately the point of Orthodox Movie night — to investigate how Orthodoxy must necessarily be found in any cinema that is beautiful, good, and true.

Limit State
Right now, when people think of Orthodox Christians in rock, the common trope is to think of doom metal or something like it. Bands like Hesychast or БАТЮШКА come to mind.
But Limit State is doing something different, and it’s refreshing. At the heart of this band is Damen Easton — vocalist, composer, and chanter. Few rock vocalists can say that they take equal inspiration from Chris Cornell and Bjork, and this is doubly true of Orthodox rock vocalists.
That said, to describe Limit State as an Orthodox rock group is reductive — it happens to be the case that Damen is Orthodox, but the songs on this bandcamp and the upcoming record tell a story about someone who is deeply engaged in a spiritual search.
Much of this album was written before his conversion, and nevertheless, so much of it presages aspects of Orthodoxy because, as was said earlier, Orthodoxy is necessarily present in all that is beautiful, good, and true.
You can stream Limit State on all DSPs but I recommend checking them out and buying their singles at the bandcamp link below!
